Why did my transparent logo download as a WebP?

You found the perfect logo or icon on a website, saved it to your desktop, and then… nothing opens it. Or it opens in a web browser instead of your normal photo viewer. Relax — your computer isn't broken. The picture is just saved in a web-only format called WebP that many everyday programs don't understand yet.

Websites use WebP because it makes pictures smaller so pages load faster. That's great for the web, but not so great when you need to drop that image into a Word document or a PowerPoint slide. Your first instinct might be to change it to a JPG, but here's the catch: JPG does not support transparent backgrounds. If your logo has that nice invisible area around it, saving as JPG will fill it with an ugly white box. PNG is the right choice because it keeps the transparent background perfectly intact — exactly like the original. Need to convert many WebP images at once? Drop a whole folder in and we'll handle every file, zipping the PNGs up for a fast bulk download. Our free converter does the whole thing right on your own computer. Your pictures are never sent to any server, so even personal screenshots, documents, or photos of your kids stay completely private. No ads, no viruses, no pop-ups, no sign-ups, no hidden paywalls, no watermarks. Just drop, convert, and download.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my logo keep its transparent background?
Yes! PNG is the gold standard for transparent backgrounds. Every invisible area around your logo or graphic stays exactly the same. You can paste it over colored slides, documents, or other images without any ugly white box showing up.
Why shouldn't I just save it as a JPG instead?
JPG does not support transparent backgrounds. If you change a transparent logo to a JPG, the invisible area around it will fill with a solid white or black square — which looks terrible when you place it on top of anything else. PNG is the safe choice.
Why are all my saved images downloading as WebP?
Most modern websites now serve pictures in WebP format because it makes pages load faster. When you right-click and save, your browser saves the original WebP instead of a normal PNG or JPG. That's why the picture won't open in older programs. Use our free converter to change it to a normal PNG that works everywhere.
Can I edit the converted PNG in Canva, PowerPoint, or Photoshop?
Absolutely! PNG is supported by virtually every design and office application — Canva, PowerPoint, Google Slides, Photoshop, Figma, you name it. Once converted, your image is ready to use anywhere.
Will the converted PNG be larger than the original WebP?
Yes, usually quite a bit larger — PNG files can be 3–5x bigger than WebP because PNG uses less aggressive compression. That's the trade-off for perfect quality and universal compatibility. If file size matters more than transparency, consider converting to JPG instead.
